If you’re a homeowner with an aging roof, you’re smart to be doing some research about your various roof replacement options. You’re looking to get a new roof without breaking the bank. You keep hearing the term architectural shingles and wondering what that means. Let’s take a look.
Architectural Shingles Are an Update On the Old Standby
Asphalt shingles have been an affordable industry standard for decades. Most older homes that have their original roof have what are known as 3-tab shingles. These shingles are made with a single layer of fiberglass that is coated with asphalt and then cut into 3 equal tabs. When installed, 3-tab shingles provide a flat appearance to the roof.
Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional shingles or laminated shingles, are made from multiple layers of asphalt-coated fiberglass. The multiple layers are laminated together in the manufacturing process, giving the shingles dimension and your roof a more attractive, updated look.
Chances are good that you can drive around your town and see examples of both types of shingles. Notice which type looks better to you.
Are Architectural Shingles Better than 3-Tab Shingles?
Not necessarily. The difference between the 2 types of asphalt shingles is mostly an aesthetic one. 3-tab shingles cost less but may not fit in with the roofing style in your neighborhood. Architectural shingles cost more but also upgrade the look of your home. If you’re governed by a Homeowner’s Association (HOA) you may be required to use architectural roof shingles when you replace your roof.
There is a third type of asphalt shingle, usually called something like Designer Series or Premium Series. These shingles are also architectural shingles, but instead of being available in a variety of colors, they more closely resemble slate tile or wood shake. As the name implies, they are a further step up, and the cost will reflect that.
The main thing is to select shingles that suit your tastes and your budget. You may also end up selecting a roofing system based on the warranty provided. Some roofing systems are warrantied for 50 years if you meet certain requirements. You will also want to ensure you hire a licensed roofing company to install your roof to be eligible for those warranties. Make sure you get several estimates before deciding who you want to hire.
